I think that's because there have been several of these topics in the last few years.

What does my nickname mean? My favorite chess opening starting from my elementary scholastic chess it also sounds like a name...sort of

Why did I choose it? It's not personal, and it's easy to remember.

How old am I? Young.

Male or female? Male

Where am I? WI, I think. All these northern states look the same.

Additional info: I'm nothing special, I'm here because I'm drawn to an intelligent community...although previous posts have suggested otherwise.

What does my nickname mean?SALGADO = salty in portuguese, but SAL = salt, GADO = cattle, so playing with words. Not funny in english, though.

Why did I choose it? Back in the old SNES days I was playing Street Fighter 2 on the arcade, and I had to choose something with 3 letters for the high score. Chose SAL, never knew why. From there, if I had more than 3 words for a high score I would complete the GADO. And the 18 is the old catchy "I was 18 when I made my first email", so decided to keep it for backwards compatibility.

How old am I? 27 biological, between 18 and 24 according to other people.

Male or female? Being a male, I like females better.

Where am I? Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil. (city/state/country)

Additional info: Taking on the home-to-work-distance topic, I go around 4,5 miles on foot to work everyday. It takes me 1 hour or so. It takes Google Maps 1h 40'. Slow pedestrians.

If you look carefully, there are a lot of people with sarcasm that don't know sheep. And lots of smart people just too shy to even speak, let alone be sarcastic (not mutually exclusive, but still).

You should consider moving to California then.

I've mentioned this before but received no feedback. Why is this forum so disproportionately male?

Any theories? Isn't it true that philosophy is a gender neutral topic?

Philosophy is, pure rational logical thought not. MOST men think that way, MOST women don't. And most of the discussions on this forum are very logical in nature, so MOST women just don't relate to it.

Sory for caps, it's an atempt to bring emotion to words. And it's fun grin

I'm suggesting, by study of books and personal experience, that most women would rather have a quick-sentences emotion/social focused talk than logical argumentative speech-based debates. Men like more speeches, women like more dialogues. Men like more logical thinking (cars, technology, economy), women like more emotional thinking (love, social subjects, children). Men like kicking ass, women like gossip (both are undesirable, I know).

But some women do like logic, I have a girl friend who studied eletrical engineering and latter went to law school (and is very argumentative). And some men like emotion, as would a ballet dancer like my cousin (he is married, by the way).

BUT this could be another topic as it is going off-topic really fast smiling face

Not only does it, sort of, sound like a name, but it, sort of, is one:
Ruy Lopez de Segura was a spanish priest in the 16th century as well as one of the very first famous chess player. He also wrote one of the first treatise about it, the "Libro de la Invencion del Arte Liberal del Axedrez" where he describes the opening that still bears his name.

Well, a lot. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't know anybody who is not called Ruysmiling face
Seriously, Ruy is still a name, not the most common one, but it still exists, especially in latin countries.

What does your nickname mean? - philosophyforums name: MatthewbCurry, now Matt C

Why did you choose it? - It's my name. I was concerned about posting right away, and I was fine, and have been, with using my full name rather than making one up. I changed my name to Matt C. It appears better methinks, but I may transition to a nickname in proper time. Now that my likings/loves are becoming more prevalent it should be fairly simple to think of one.

How old are you? - about 26 1/2 years old

Male or Female? - male

Where at? Austin, TX

Any additional details/interesting facts? My eyes are blue, but I have a brown spot covering about a quarter of my left eye. And this is interesting to me: about 10 years ago I don't think I had ever read a non-fiction book or non-fiction magazine, now I am trying to read and watch a bit more fiction to curtail my obsession with non-fiction.

Absolutely. wink

Just consider the most ultra-male movements past or present and you'll see that this is true - say, the Taliban, Wahabism, Falangism, National Socialism, et al. To summarize this male proclivity for pure logic, I will quote General José Millán-Astray of Spain: "Death to intelligence! And long live death!" (He shouted this paean to pure reason on October 12, 1936, as he drove an elderly professor out of the University of Salamanca at gunpoint.) grin

Since when does philosophy entail 'pure rational logical thought' anyway? I consider that a profoundly irrational belief. No, I submit that most intelligent and self-respecting women may well steer clear of any environment in which they are regarded as ninnies whose childlike minds are unable to grapple with supposedly 'manly' questions of rock-hard logic and reason.

Since this day is the eleventh of September, I may as well wrap up this post with a snapshot of pure male 'logic' so explosively expressed a few years back:

As for my username, it is a reference to the political movement I founded and my position within it. 'SS' stands for the Sovereignist Syndicate (and Symposium), not the Nazi Schutstaffel as a few have assumed, though I have to admit that they did have some style...

Age - 29 (despite its proximity to the big three-oh, I find my age preferable to the dyslexic alternative of 92)

Sex - male (though most of my close friends/comrades are female)

Location - currently the U.S. Midwest (though ultimately an artificial island country should we have our way)

What does my name mean: It's one of Han Solo's aliases from the Star Wars books.

Why did I choose it: Because I'm a huge nerd and I thought it sounded cool.

How old are you: Probably not old enough.

Male

Where: St Paul, Minnesota.

Interesting fact: I ran varsity track all 4 years of high school. I was in the top 4 100-meter runners, and I was the star pole vaulter as an upperclassman.

Quite a champion of women's equality you are, hmm? Someone who advocates himself to be the dictator of a state that legalizes sexual slavery of the bimbo. Lol.

Seek professional help. That's my honest non-sarcastic advice.

So these are the utra male movemets ehh? Those movements are all impotent. They are the aberrations of history. The Taliban are a bunch of illiterate Koran thumpers. National Socialism is a narrow minded backward rather feeble attempt to mix mysticism with politics. The falangists are the Spanish equivalents of red necks. Really there is no thought within these movements. Really they are so silly that someone who truly believes in their ideals like Heidegger manages to leave. Historical wannabe heroes. That is all you can think up when it comes to manly qualities ... ouch.
