As far as modern theory is concerned it would have to change spatial dimensions as well as the temporal. The only two ways to theoretically time travel into the past are to either move faster than light or travel through a wormhole. Both of these methods warp spacetime dramatically. A wormhole powerful enough for a human being to safely traverse without being torn apart by gravitational tidal effects would swallow the earth.

You would therefore require a spaceship to at least get far enough away from the earth to travel into the past without destroying the earth in the process. Likewise, moving faster than light would require leaving the earth behind.

Aside from moving in time in relation to space, can we not move in time in relation to imaginary time? It seems that physicist use the concept of imaginary time a lot to describe a things where conventional space time breaks down. I would assume time travel fits those criterias.

Keep it simple.
