I think it's safe to say that women more and more are becoming mere objects in today's society. I think that this is inherently dangerous and obtuse ESPECIALLY in today's newly globalizing world. The media it seems is taking the formula "sex sells" and pushing it to the limits of becoming almost humorously ridiculous. Now I understand the reality of men being more visually oriented, and that women's looks have always been this strange and mysteriously powerful source of ambiguous romanticism, but I say it's gone too far. I cant even turn on the TV or watch a movie without being embarrassed to watch it. Let's face it, this is one of the only forums that I can post this without getting flamed to death by posters claiming my 'gayness'. But I've thought about this for a while, and I just wish all the over sexualized madness would stop, for the sake of not only creating healthy relationships but for the sake of sex itself. Women are no longer judged by their talents but by their breasts: this is not good.

"In olden days a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking..." But I'm not convinced that women were any less objectified back then. One could even argue that it is men who are being treated as objects to be exploited by the advertisers. 'Because we're worthless' - but if we had a shiny new car, the women would be impressed. raised eyebrow

It would be nice if we weren't so shallow minded as to be influenced by such things, but advertisers only use sex because it sells - the odd thing is that it works on women too. I have a vague theory that the world is run by women, and their main concern is to increase the sexual arousal of men to something approaching that of women. Otherwise, men would spend all their time playing football and talking about cars and philosophy instead of paying proper attention to women.

People are mere objects, and so I see nothing wrong with treating them as such (I only play the moronic social games to get what I want).

A lot of people from other cultures do not understand the western obsession with sex. As far as they are concerned sex is nice, but so what? Why obsess over sex? No doubt there are many reasons for this, and I will just attempt to name a few possibilities.

Mass media has had a lot to do with peoples' obsession with sex, sex sells as they say. It is any easy way to get an audience's attention. Sex then is a money making venture and vice versa, making money is considered sexy. As with many other markets we even regulate how sex is given away for free as well as how it is sold and use sex as a status symbol. Sex is also often considered a taboo subject, which just makes it all the more valuable a commodity that demands advertising. For one generation it becomes fashionable to advertise their sexuality, while the next generation may advertise their chasitity, but neither generation chooses to ignores their sexuality the way we might any number of bodily functions.

This generation has been living under world wide Capitalism in which exchange and profit is priority. Sex is not any more holy, but sports for large majority. Women's sex is a good or commodity in market even for import and export metaphorically. Luckily, women's status isn't yet depend on law of supply and demand.

Sex has always sold. Pornographic images have been found from Greek vases, I am sure, the very first minute momo sapiens picked up a branch he used t to draw a pair of breasts in the sand. The institutionalisation of sexuality is of coure always different. We in the west display a lot of it and very openly, but in Turkey for instance everyone is just as obsessed with sex and display it openly too. The Arabs buy themselves silly in Turkish lingery stores.

I think the balance who was subject and who object was much more distorted in past times. Women were more objectified, men less. Nowadays a man's body gets used for promoting as well. So I don't feel sex inherently objectifies women, it objectifies us all, in the sense that sex especially points out the bodily aspect of ourselves. In this day and age our materiality is put in the forefront and show cased.

I thought that was a great idea. But had the feeling I was catching a mild schizoid-fever. I don't think men are sex machines. It would be true to say that women are more strongly driven by there instincts than men. Men have been raised more in the stoic way then women. They can go to stores, buy clothes and later see how men react to how they look. There are no problems with this, it's just that women want us to look at them. They might feel a sigh of relief when they know that they look good. Look at Iran these day's. If you look carefully at the cell phone short movies, there are A LOT of women on the streets. I think that they have been globalized. It is men who are being over sexualized by other men!

This song will prepare you for a good smile.

Whoah the women have been globalised! grin but seriously, I think that was the idea of unenlightened theory, a plot by women to keep us lazt laggards of men aroused, because otherwise we talk football cars and philosophy all day.

I tend to agree with both coalclear and unenlightened. It is not an exploitation of only women, but also men: the human species in general is under attack. Turn off your TV folks.
