Is it simple? I like simple. Don't like typing gibberish, despite evidence otherwise.

Well this old goat has just installed Mint on a decrepit lenovo, and after a day's pulling his hair out and pasting gibberish into the command line, the wireless connection is working. Now where's the feeling smug smilie... oh yes, cool

And thanks for the recommendation. optrader.

Hello you old goat. smiling face

How fast is your decrepit machine (and more important probably, how much memory)? The reason I'm asking is that I am probably far more decrepit (two PIIs, 400Hz, one 128MB and the other 256MB), want to run something on them, but am worried that the GUI installation will fully overload them, would prefer a console install (and then the system wou run fine from that point). Not all linuxes obviously, only the ones compatible with old hardware. Mint probably would run I think but its the install itself which might pose a problem, read that on their website (all the unpacking).

What I am planning (hoping, hoping, hoping...) to do is give Damn Small Linux a try over the weekend, I need the printer, usb, and video playback (if possible) at the moment. And the brother printer has debian package drivers, which is why I am thinking first to try DSL, since it will install to a more or less debian machine, used the debian package manager. Or just bite the big bullet and step through a slackware installation (console).

I think what I might buy next might be a netbook (without all the net stuff, I just want it for the size and to have something new).

It's not that old, but it has a broken hinge, a couple of buttons missing and you have to wedge the power input with a block of wood. Plenty of memory and stuff tho. I inherited via a time machine from my daughter.

Gad zookz! I understand Goatism now! It's psychological warefare! Make the younger generation think all you consume is 'crap'.

Hmm... that Goat idea might be an interesting 'forums' fundraiser - if it is true. Might be interesting getting rid of some goats. sticking out tongue

For a moment I thought Goatism was some form of enslaving people into some Jewish world domination theory. Serious.

This song will prepare you for a good smile.

Nah! I rather find the 'donation of Goat' to be of value. It is somehwat harder for the 'leaders' of state to make goats disappear in comparison to mere sacks of grains.

The exchange of humanitarian aid would therefore happen at a lower -hopefully more observant level.

I'll have to do that tonight after I get home. I haven't hit my limit for available funds for donations yet for this year. Sigh... "The well" looks a bit over my budget.

Mute,
I have a Pupply Linux distribution and it comes in handy if I am having some computer problems because it can be run from the dvd-drive. ...DSL...Gentoo...Ubuntu 9.10...Linux Mint...Slackware...

Well, that was rather fun. First step a live partioner, that was already linux and a full desktop of packages, ran fast and without a hitch. Then tried the DSL and same thing. Kept it live for now, but also fast and no hitches. On a very old machine. Next up might be Puppy. Or one or two more. But that's probably it (except for a real slackware install at some point). Even the Xubuntu (and likely the Mint) are incredibly slow installs (as was W2000) on these machines. So just get one or two running and all the necessary functions tuned. The things I need at the moment first, then take some time for the slackware, to really get the know the system (have some experience already, so it is not completely new). And if I can get the printer/scanner and video playback going without too much trouble (chances are good) I will be quite happy. Then set it up for programming (so local server with PHP - at the moment, also C stuff and Python). I can't get enough of small-ish programs and systems, they are just my style, and I can't understand monster systems that need GBs big time just to install. And if I never see another systems registry in my whole life all the better. So I'm happy, and my PIIs seem to have fallen madly in love with the choose-your-own-world of Linux.
