It's a rush, gets the blood pumping and its fun. It's like riding a roller coaster, you're scared but you enjoy it because there's no true danger, you're pretty safe.

I agree strongly with the original post in that it is linked to curiosity.
As man explores his mortality many questions about the mystery of death arrive. Images of death and such tend to entertain this curiosity.
As was also pointed out in the original post; as man explores his nature many questions about a "darker-self" appear. Biographies of serial killers and such satisfy this curiosity.
Even though these things may shock, disgust and disturb people this curiosity can prevail, granted they don't put themselves in danger of the horrors they are curious of.
