In the traditonal sense,Orientalism is the western obsession with "the east" or "the Orient" These Days its more about otherness or the other Humanity has a tendency to setup oppositions:occident/orient,culture/nature,female/male,good/evil,active/passive, modern/acient,machine/body, what drives this? also What Is Orientalism in the broader sense of the world ie escapism. "the orient is the site of scientific and political fantasy,displaced from the body politcs of the west itself, a field of free play for shamelessly paranoid constructions,dream like elaborations of the western traumas. In the 19th century, the orient became more and more the site for erotic as well as political projection" (Peter Wollen, "Fashion/Orientalism/The Body")
