If you put values into action consistently they become habits.

Virtue is the habit of doing good. Habits become hardwired in the brain, so that moral decisions can be made in the blink of an eye. Only when two contradictory habits come into play does a person need to make a conscious decision.

If I have a habit of helping people in distress and a habit of self preservation, and I see a person in distress in a dangerous situation (say they are slipping on a slippery slope that is near a sheer cliff) you mush make a decision that balances the two values, or decide which value is more important than the other.

If the decision you make makes you uncomfortable later, later reflection is the time when a change of values occur. Humans tend to make decisions from habit rather than reason when pressed to make a decision. This is why moral codification is so important. Say I have the value that casual sex is wrong (Creates undesirable consequences for me). Such a code prevents me from doing something stupid in the hear of the moment. If I'm famous and have women throwing themselves at me, I might change my mind after great deliberation, deciding that casual sex with models testing negative for STD's is okay to do once a week unless I have a longer term romantic interest.

once a week, if you have them tested for STD's and they are modles... Well the only moral problem I can see is the lack of romance, would they have to fill in a form?
