Especially if society sees fit to rid itself of unwarranted ideologues do to their socially destructive tendencies...

I am more interested in questions than answers; dialog than dictation.
If we can reasonably believe that there is not just a breach, but a fundamentally unclosable gap
between the individual mind and the ultimate nature of the reality; the primordial thing in itself,
then 'true' mystery does exist.

Are you saying if you were mentally disabled you wouldn't want someone to end your life for you? Especially if you were one of the vegetables.

The retardation process is undesirable in any biological form. Human beings consider retardation as a bane to a personality (or when forming one) - and more importantly that it's random. Due to it's unpredictability at a large scale, human beings tend not to realise the gravity of it for the person affected. The sheer manner of our social inter-dependence and economic activities suggests that a mentally handicapped individual will not be able to contribute to the survival of another - hence there is a bane to this position.

Should there be possibilities that retarded individuals be able to produce and participate in the inter-depending social sphere, they would then enjoy a higher status. It's this helplessness, and their limitations that defines their social positions. So, yes, there are obvious reasons to this - and since this isn't as common, we face dependence unexpectedly making our assumptions over a dependence by a mentally handicapped person even worse than it is.

That's what makes it a bane for the mentally handicapped, which I think is a terrible social position to be in.

Hi,

The word retarded comes from to retard, meaning to hinder or impair. Meaning if someone is retarded, they are hindered or impaired. But such people are innocent like children. They never grow bitter, don't try to manipulate people, nor do they try to hurt people. I'm talking about the ones that are semi functional in society as opposed to the near vegetative people. They are often looked down upon and made fun of, but ,honestly, they're only goals are to be happy and be loved. And they achieve those goals far easier than any 'normal' person. So are they really second class citizens as they are treated, or are they the lucky ones?

Shadowwriter before you make such sweeping statements as the one above I suggest you spend some time working in a home for the intellectually handicapped etc. These people may look innocent and happy through the eyes of a television soap, but the truth is often very different. They have personalities, likes and dislikes, they can be friendly or bitchy, and despite your beliefs they can try to hurt one another. Often they know that they are different from the rest of people in society and they can feel put down and relegated because of it. Mongoloids with their smiling moon faces often do look happy but they can throw tantrums and be upset like anyone else.

We're all human and like any book you have to read beneath the cover before you think you know who we are.

Cheers.
