When I say "perfect being," I suppose I am thinking of something like Anselm's "that-than-which-no-greater-can-be-conceived." As I see it, a need or desire implies a lack of something (if it did not, then the need or desire could not exist). Let us assume that there is a "perfect being," P, which does have needs or desires. Being "perfect," P would only desire good things. Therefore P must necessarily lack some good thing(s). But if this is so, I can conceive of another being, P*, which is the same as P, but does not lack these good things. Thus P* would be greater than P, and so P could not be a perfect being. I conclude therefore that a "perfect being" could not have needs or desires.

What I'm trying to say though is that P or P* doesn't need any personal needs or desires to create something, I don't see simply existing as validation for existing, the universe suggests things like to do things. To me this can be seen as a need or a desire, but you may consider that to not be perfection, I think if not it's close enough to use the term.

OK then it seems like we might be in agreement but I am just using the words "need" and "desire" in a stricter sense than you are.

Amusement. Curiousity.

To see what would happen. He just learns as he goes along~ That's my theory.

Subject: Experience of Perfection
quote post
#55
God being All Knowing and All That Is, wished to be able to experience the perfection of Its being and knowing. As God is All That Is and there is nothing else, however, this was not possible for in the absence of that which is not, that which is may not be experienced. If 24 degrees celsius were the only temperature, for example, then although it may be rather comfortable to us, it would also be meaningless in terms of experience as there would be nothing with which to compare it. Is it hot? Is it cold? Such designations require the presence of higher or lower temperatures for meaning. Similarly, a candle's flame has no beauty or light when perceived from the point of view of the sun, whose grandeur robs a mere flame of its existence and renders it invisible.

As God is All That Is and there is nothing else, God decided to do the next best thing; God created the illusion of that which is not in order to provide a context in which That Which Is could be experienced. Thus the universe as we know it was created, and through our experiences and those of other sentient beings does God experience the glory of Godself. This can be seen as a great gift of love as it allows each of us the opportunity to experience the divine.

Something that has always fascinated me and that has never been explained in a reasonable way, is Why did God, or Allah or whomever decide to create the universe anyway.

Anytime this has ever been touched upon by me in the past the answer has been: 'God created the universe because he loves us' which makes no sense, as we were not even created yet, it makes God sound like he has a bad case of dependancy.. Thoughts?

God created us through His wish to give, to bestow. He created our will to receive exactly in the amount that He wanted to give. That is why we must attain everything that He wants to give us - eternity, strenght, perfection, total control. This means we must assume all the duties of God.
