This forum is titled Philosophy of language

The emphasis is on the former word, so the thread should actually contain some philosophy. Thus, before you post here, you should consider whether the post is actually philosophical or not. If not, community / off-topic is probably the right place to post it. Or then you are better off not posting it at all. Threads that do not contain philosophy will be either moved or deleted. So if your post is missing, there is a reason for it. It is not a cue to repost it.

Now to make this a bit easier for you, a list of topics you should not post here:

BUMMER 1:
Questions about the definitions of words. Philosophical discussion about the meaning of certain words is welcome (but please avoid original posts like "What is the definition of time?"). If you wish to have a definition for a word, use www.dictionary.com for that.

BUMMER 2:
Requests to translate texts or words. There might be people capable of doing that here, but you will find them at the community / off-topic section. Moreover, they are more likely to find your thread if it is not deleted.

BUMMER 3:
Discussion about lyrics of songs or poems, if they are not specifically philosophical. And "philosophy" here does not mean so called "life philosophy" - just because you think there is a great "philosophical" message in the words "Life sucks, but so do you" or "hit me baby one more time", it does not entail that there actually is. If a poem is of philosophical interest, you should also consider the philosophy of arts section.

BUMMER 4:
Book reviews. If it's a philosophy book, consider the intro/factual forum. If the book just has philosophical implications, you might consider philosophy of the arts . Otherwise you should consider not posting.

BUMMER 5:
Requests for something to read. If it is not philosophical, try community / off-topic or do not post at all. If it is philosophical, you might want to refer to the intro to philosophy / factual issues forum in the general philosophy forum. If you have a specific question in mind, for example "what book from Kant should I read first?", you can post a question in the intro to philosophy / factual issues forum.

In short: the post should not be about language, but about the philosophy of language.

If your idea for a thread has managed to avoid all five bummers, then you are free to post it (if it fulfils the standards set to this site in general). Who knows, it might even give me a good idea for a sixth bummer wink.

Regards,
~Morrandir~
