Subject: Philosophically speaking, how can I kill my sex drive
I'm trying to live a highly disciplined life as a Buddhist monk would and denying myself certain worldly pleasures, such as masturbation, and starting to practice the martial arts everyday as well as meditating everyday. I have already refrained from masturbation for 4 days, a feat that I have not accomplished since I was 13. This is extremely difficult for me, as I am 19 years old, have never had sex, and have never so much as kissed a girl. I don't feel I can make it any longer, as it's getting harder and harder everyday (no pun intended.) Pretty much anything gets my erotic desires going, such as seeing a girl in leggings or yoga pants. So what can I do to get rid of these erotic desires? To those who live in the world, a healthy sexuality is not only fine but necessary. However, I do not want to live in the world anymore. I am trying to practice that art of overcoming the world, not living within it.

Any suggestions at all would be helpful.

I saw an almost identical question on a forum dealing with Eastern Philosophy. After many learned posts the guy basically admitted he wasn't really doing anything more than ever so vaguely spiritual or philosophical.

If you were a Buddhist monk I hardly think you'd be posting on here somehow.

And go where exactly?

Don't get me wrong, I find your modus operandi quite admirable. Yet remember, you are still young and full of vigor, and what is felicitous in one age might not be quite so in another.

Quoth Bacon, "Nature to be commanded must be obeyed."

But I sincerely wish you luck with your celibacy. If I were you, I would occupy myself with writing - poetry, short stories, a novel, essays, whatever, just write as much as you can, and you might feel your desires dissipate onto the page. Or else just read Hegel or Kant until you can hardly think straight, much less copulate

A healthy 19-year-old NEEDS TO BE MASTURBATING. The idea that anyone would allow a religious or philosophical idea (or ideal) to interfere with deriving almost instant pleasure in a direct physical way is absolutely nuts.

I'm unhappy with much in my life. Reality so far hasn't come any where near my youthful ideals. So I've reasoned that I would be happier if I detached myself from everything- no personal interests, no business affairs, no emotions, no attachments, no property, no pleasure and no name. Everything in me wholly absorbed in a single thought.

That's a good idea, although I'm- at best- a mediocre writer. Could you perhaps recommend me some books that would help me with my journey?

The problem is masturbation does nothing for me. It is nothing more than an intoxicating and energy sapping activity that leads to nothing but very temporary satisfaction.

Have to agree that masturbation won't do nothing for you longterm unless you are a highly paid porn star. Life, however, consists mostly (at least 95%) of temporary satisfaction (watching a good movie, eating at a good restaurant, ejaculating). Please do not get sucked (no pun intended) into believing that there is any actual virtue or benefit in this life from excessive self-denial (but hey, it's still okay to lay off the cheescake at Thanksgiving if you want to lose a few pounds, LOL).

I doubt you'll adhere to such restrictions for years and years, but just so you know, medically the prostate needs action -- celibate priests have 30% higher rates of prostate cancer than the general public. It is a good thing to learn discipline, and self-control, especially while young, but once you have control, and are not under the control of your impulses, is when you allow it. Don't refrain for life, or even years, it isn't healthy.

That said, if you killed your sex drive, it would kill the point in attempting to develop self-mastery, it is supposed to be difficult -- unless it is the masturbation or sex itself that you think is wrong, and for all time -- in which case, I don't think that is correct. It is an unhealthy idea, and practice in the long run.

I have no desire to deny myself sex, only the act of masturbation, which I actually feel is one of the major things restricting me from actually going out there and looking for sex and meeting people.
