Subject: PF Chat -- IRC

A chat system for PF is back up now; after a bit of thought, we decided to use an IRC chat system, since the Java system provded to be slow/annoying, and the flashchat had a few other troublesome issues (connecting etc.). IRC is very good, however, speedy, and reliable. More explained below.

If you have an IRC client, then you can use that to connect (details below), if you do not however, you can use an online client; we have customized one for PF users:
Access the online IRC Chat system here.

If using the online chat, don't worry about changing any of the details, apart from the NickName field, which should be your PF moniker.

What is IRC?

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) was made to allow for the participation in real-time conversations. Put simply, IRC is the chat client of choice for a wide-range of different topics, but it is particularly popular with OpenSource computer software projects. IRC is sorted by a server, which in itself has several channels. The one PF will be using is known as Freenode, and is quite popular itself.

What are the advantages?

One of the strenghts of IRC is its flexibility; there are IRC-clients in Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris, BSD, and of course -- there are online IRC clients such as the one that PF here links to. Of course, IRC is faster than a regular Java chat, more efficient than a Flash chat, and doesn't need to perform all of the refreshes that a PHP chat needs to. However, to get the full strength of IRC you'd have to download and use one of the chat-clients; you won't really suffer much from using the online one, however.

Possible IRC clients:

mIRC -- the most popular IRC client on Windows. Full instructions for download/installing are here
Trillian -- a very clean messenger client, that handles all things from the MSN messenger network, through Yahoo Messenger, to IRC. Insructions for using IRC are here.
xchat -- a decent IRC client that runs both on Windows and Linux systems.

Once you have your client, all the information you will need to connect is:
Server: irc.freenode.net
Channel: #philosophyforums (some clients may require the hash (#))

Feel free to ask any questions about it in this thread.

You know, it would have made more sense to me to use an already popular philosophy channel, like #philosophy on UnderNet. But I guess freenode works too, but that network is mainly for free software projects. Philosophyforums might be a little out of place there smiling face

Not really, since this is a chat for philosophyforums.

Freenode is great, and, as its previous name suggests, yup, it's mainly for Open Source projects, but it is by no means restricted to it. They're looking to get more participation from other areas; I've spoken to a few representatives, and they've said things to that affect; it's more anti non-free projects/illegal downloads etc., I'd say.

Okay, if it's cool with the freenode people, it's cool with me. I'll be lurking on there, but I don't guarentee I'll be active. I don't actually have time for IRC smiling face

It should probably be mentioned for the benefit of ignorant people like me that many usernames are already taken by people from other channels -- thus when dreamweaver says the nickname field "should be your PF moniker" that's often impossible, you may have to choose a new one.

If somebody else has thought of the name "sensabile", I'll fund philosophyforums for the rest of its existence.*

I mentioned to DW that Pyre should be called Hermes, as Hermes was the messenger and assistant of the gods. nod

That is all.

Some other forums I visit have a Who's In Chat next to the Who's Online. Helps make the decision to enter the chat or not.

We had that with FlashChat. With IRC, so far as I know it's not possible. (Though dreamweaver is welcome to prove me wrong.)
