Hi everyone! I have been wondering about this for a while now, and would really appreciate it if some of you could share your insights with me grin

Feelings and attitudes are changing constantly as a result of the events that were going on at the time. For example, after the Civil War, Transcendentalism ideals were not so apparent anymore. Instead, the harsh realities and aftermath of the war gave rise to Realism. Are there any dominant traits that society favors, no matter the time period, that remains somewhat the same?

In addition, things are constantly changing in our lives. Our environment is changing, our schedule is changing, and we ourselves are changing as we go through life. We know that not only are we changing as humankind, but we are also changing as individuals. Do you think change is "always good?" It may seem like nothing in our lives is for forever. So, what is the most permanent thing?

The only permanent thing in life is Death. You have to understand it is the one thing that we all go through and that always stays the same. As for thing that dominate our society, well, think about it, what is the one thing that people always turn too whenever something hits the fan? Well it is religion. You can see that religion is one of the most dominant things that exsist in society. It drives people to kill(theoretically I am not saying what is right or wrong nor am i bashing a religion merely stating what happens) and people will always turn to god when it is the worst times. Notice how now, we couldn't careless about This god or this being whatever you call it, but when somebody dies we pray, and when there is a War we all turn to it. I hope this helped you out. Let me know if you need anything else.

Nothing can be proved to be permanent, as that implies infinity.

I basically agree with Crackers. Though I would perhaps phrase it differently.

I think the nature of causality (which we probably don't understand)is the most permanent "thing".

We sense. We reason. We predict.
We don't always get those right.

Thanks for the replies guys! The nature of causality - I think I like that phrasing. smiling face

If there is no absolute permanence, then what is something which changes the slowest, or that resists change the best?

In addition, I have been thinking about enlightenment. Once attained, are you forever there? Or does the enlightenment come and go? Can it be lost?

Permanence is illusory. change is inevitable.

Enlightenment must end when the body dies, but to be enlightened is to exist in the eternal present - so perhaps it wouldn't matter to you that your existence was impermanent if one was enlightened... Who knows, eh.
