If I were to venture a wild guess, I'd say it started as "yea here". Another possibility is a variant of yahoo, which originated in Gulliver's Travels.

But who is to guard the guards themselves?

Perhaps some Gaelic-speaking immigrant joyfully shouted from his window, "Oiche Nollaig! Oiche!" (Christmas Blessings! Blessings!) equivalent to Merry Christmas. The word Oiche is pronounced "EE-Ha". or for some other 'blessed event, like a birth or a discovery......
