Mayor Bloomberg of New York City just announced that they are going to use these Microturbines for apartment buildings(and maybe hybrid buses). They can run on natural gas, waste gas, biogas, as well as liquid fuels. They require no oil or lubrication to run.

This will help cut greenhouse gases and cut back on our dependency on foreign oil.

They even take the waste heat generated from the turbine process and turn it into thermal energy that can be used for heating or cooling

I like that but it is not enough. Those moderate reductions do not change the underlying environmental problem of industrial and economic growth. If every city in the world polluted as much as New York, I bet civilization as we know it would be destroyed in a matter of years. The world just couldn't handle everyone in the world driving cars, for example. The only thing stopping the rest of the world from it is economic inability. But eventually the "developing nations" will "develop." And to develop means to destroy the enviornment without any personal responsibility.

I agree with this. Although efficiency improvements are commendable, by themselves they will be a futile effort since one will be limited by the 1st law of themodynamics unless the energy use is either substantially reduced or zero carbon means of energy production are used (Biogas comes near to this but is limited in scope).

To illustrate this absurdity we now have 4x4 hybrids. What is the use of increasing efficiency from 40 to 50% if that 50% is obtained from using many times as much fuel than necessary because of the excess bulk and weight.
