Isn't absurdity the opposite of philosophy? They often 'appear' to land on polar opposites of the same rod.

"Functional philosophy vs informed philosophy" seems to be an issue that many 'thinkers' have wrestled with, in many areas of study.

How then do you propose to differentiate between usage and action?

"...There was a writer who asked why it was that when we find positive experiences we say that only the physical facts are real, but in negative experiences we believe that reality is subjective. He made an example of those who say that in birth only the pain is real, the joy a subjective point of view, but that in death it is the emotional loss that is the reality." - Tony Ballantyne, Recursion.

For me, I would suggest that usage can at times be something as instinctual as being born with the need to use our voices to express to others that we are in need of something (nourishment, shelter, nurturing)and are born with the understanding of how to use such voice. Action would imply, to me, that there is a learning of; or a pattern of experience, that is collected/performed to obtain an outcome we are already familiar with.

Really? Actually, that is a much more interesting reply then I expected. Kudos.

Don't worry about these conditions, they will dull and wear off after a while. And then it starts to get interesting.wink

Hello everyone,

My name is Anthony Marshall. I'm 25 years old, and a current student of both Pure Mathematics and Philosophy. I'm very excited to have a place where I can both read and participate in informed philosophical debate (my participation being contingent upon a requisite period of reflection as per the forum guidelines smiling face ).

Welcome to PF Cruise Lines antsmars and antoinette. I hope neither of you are prone to seasickness. Formal wear is required in the dining-room. Philosophizing is allowed in all areas of the ship except for the 'bridge.' The Bayesian Casino will unfortunately be closed for renovation for the duration of the cruise.

I don't think that I'm fully understanding this question/statement. Is it that, by your definition, philosophy is, by nature, a reaction to previously established criterion?
My use of "informed" was meant to connote that statements made in these forums are considered before being put forth, which seems to me seems to be a primary qualification of good philosophy. "Put forth," meaning verbalized, willfully expressed from primary conscience through a chosen medium, and "considered" meaning undertaking the intellectual process of pursuit of cognizance.
Wouldn't functional philosophy be be philosophy informed it's utility within a set system (science, mathematics, reality), where informed philosophy would be philosophy informed by pure logic?
