Hey everyone!! I need some help. I am 17 years old and I believe I have made up my mind and would like to major in philosophy and politcal science.Because I have another year before I am off to college, I would like to get a "Head Start" and do as much reading/studying as possible. I would really appreciate it if someone could make(or link) a reading list for me consisting of the "essential" reads. Some authors that I have read are: Kant, William James, Kierkegaard, Nietzche, and some Aristotle and Plato. All great stuff, and I am also working on "Power of Logic" I am about Half way thru and have been practicing,it's tad bit dry(little more than that lol) but I would imagine the class would be a bit more exciting. I really have no clue where to start with the politic/economy side(Marx?) So please post any suggestions and recommendations. Thanks a bunch!!

edit- Any insight to what college philosophy classes are like would be great(read and discuss??etc etc)

Nice start! You read something for everyone! (idealists, pragmatists, classics) Get into German Idealists since, if you do Political Science you'll hear a lot about Hegel! Modern political philosophy has phases of 'hip' philosophers - Gilles Deleuze is 'in' right now. Derrida was 'in' a decade ago! Also read books by living politicians, diplomats and world leaders - they can offer insights that theoreticians can't. Kissinger, Semitis, Octavio Paz, etc.
Good luck with your choice of study.

What is it like to be a Bat? -Thomas Nagel It’s a delightful modern-classic that deserves reading.

As for class expectations, expect one of two responses give or take who’s teaching: A.) Why am I here? No, not in the world I mean why I am I stuck in this pointless class that doesn’t teach me anything? B.) Preponderant cognitive orgasm of understanding bunnies!
