I am teaching my gr 12 philosophy class for a period on logic. I recently found this great forum, and have been browsing. Anyways, I was hoping I could get some ideas for it and to use up time. So far I am going to give definitions at the start and give scenarios for people too talk/think about the logical solution for. I am also thinking if I can find some clips online or other forms of media I can use that somehow. I definetly need more things too take up some time, so if anybody has any ideas I have not thought of about teaching logic, I would appreciate it! thanks grin

How much time do you need to fill?

I remember that in the 7th or 8th grade (USA), I learned truth tables and a natural deduction system for propositional logic for a state test. Several years later, they eliminated some material, including the logic. Now no one learns logic before college.

Why not set them a spelling test too take up the rest of the time it would definetly help learn logic too know about run-on sentences to.

Well a test of some kidn is a good idea acctually. I need to present for about and hour and 20 minutes. Any more ideas would be appreciated as I am having a tough time thinking of anything else to do.

Another thing I am having trouble thinking of is, scenerios... I need some scenerios that counter morals/emotions with logic, and I will ask the class what they would do it the situation and see what they say. It is supposed to be very interactive with the class.

Critical thinking was one of my favorite courses, but I didn't have it until college. Go through a list of fallacies and practice finding them in newspapers and news reports. See if they can come up with a logical proof for not doing homework.

Ethics is the measuring of morality. Morality is the measuring of good. Good is the measuring of benefit. Benefit is the measure of values.

Does anyone know where I can find some logic "Scenarios" , so I can use this for the students to suggest there opinions of what they would do in the given situation. I have 1 or 2 but I need some more, and I cannot find any.

What I really need is something to create a class discussion with... I present on Wednesday, and I don't have anything for that yet, which is what takes up the majority of the time and is the most important.

So really what top within the subject of Logic can be discussed with opinions to express about it? Possibly something that could be argued about?

The earth is about to blowup and you have only one spaceship to carry the ten founders of the new human race.

Who would you send? Why?

Some old fashioned riddles can help in teaching some logic theories as well, ones around the 17th, 18th century are particularly interesting I believe. Like the one about how a guy can go innocent by making a statement that the king can neither prove true or false.

As well, if they get really bored, you could pick up a couple of neat 3-d tricks, and how easy it is to decieve ones' perception.
