Don't confuse frustration with hate.

"With no relation to class or social background, whether it suits them or not, people yearn for a dream. Sustained by a dream, hurt by a dream, revived by a dream, killed by a dream. And even after being abandoned by a dream, it continues to smolder from the bottom of one's heart... probably until the verge of death. A man should envision such a lifetime once. A life spent as a martyr to the god named "dream."

I am not talking about confusion. I have heard them say they hate America not that they are fustrated but that they hate.

Without even knowing the meaning of it people will say that they "hate".

For the winner there was a big three-legged cauldron to stand over a fire - it was worth a dozen oxen by the Greek's reckoning - and for the loser he brought forward a woman thoroughly trained in domestic work whom they valued at four oxen.

Yes, and when the mood strikes me I really hate my sister.

Of course, I don't mean that "I hate her" hate her. I just hate her to hear the sound of it. It makes me feel better.

Or is the United States one of the most self-praising countries in the world? Are United States politicians and leaders forced more than most other countries to constantly express patriotism? Judging by mainstream culture in each country, is the United States one of the most nationalist and ideologically patriotic (to almost fascist proportions) developed countries? Those are questions I would like to see answered.

It depends on the countries current belief in its ideals. For instance, being an Aussie, I believe the current perception of the US is similar to what you have stated "...is the Unites States one of the most self-praising countries in the world?". Whilst it may be the case in regard to international reputation, when taken in context, there are plenty of American individuals who express discontent with the countries current stance on a variety of issues. It is the entity who promotes Americas views internationally, which portrays a nation of unity, thereby inflicting the short comings of the nation on its individuals. It seems to me, that such actions (by the aforementioned entity) are more damaging than helpful.

There is still alot of anti-US sentiment in OZ that is mostly attributed to perceived arrogance rather than anything definable. In fact, I would bet that if you tested those that stated their hate, they couldn't back it up with anything tangible. Hating a nation of 300 million people is pretty short sighted. Obviously not everyone agrees with everyone. It is just easier for someone to blame those with the most influence, for something that individual believes he/she has no power to change.

Oh and I didn't answer your question.

Although most Australians are scared of you, they still find it "tough" to poke fun at the US, thereby from a patriotic stand point, our Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, has an amount of flexibility where he can also poke at US policy. Our previous leader was out of touch and consistently promoted Cricket as a national sport to give him credit with the common man. Unfortunately for him, the country had moved on to more important things than cricket (though it is still popular).

So yes, your president is forced via patriotism, to promote the US through what has now become repetitive catch cries. Our prime ministers have gotten away with patriotism through contradiction and promotion of pass times. Of the 3, I don't believe that any one holds more value than the other.

I think a lot of interesting things can be said about the US, but two attitudes are I think the most idiotic way of saying something about it.

1. I just hate the US

2. Love it or leave it.

To answer your question aliop, no you are not the only one that noticed. Once in a while threads crop up asking this question. In fact I think it is considered anti American not to wonder why people seem to hate the US and not to think that the answer is jealousy.

Tobi

So the OP is applying strawman to themselves? In WW2, did people hate Germany, Japan or Italy? They may have used those words to describe the forces of the day, but it was really the ruling classes and the actions that were hated. It happened many times in every country. Why does America think that they are the first ones in history to be hated for uniformly? It is a strawman argument. If you hate us doing X, then you must hate everything we do, even some of the good things. The truth is that America is just another country that is riding a wave of some strategic advantages. A lot of people around the world are angry over what is being done *to* America, (stripping of rights, violation of international law), and in its name. Those same people *love* other aspects, (good and bad), and are ready to be friends again as soon as it stops. I bet you can't name a country that hates every aspect. A lot of Europeans I know complain about everything that America does -- but they the one redeeming quality that keeps them hooked is something simple -- like Jazz music.

The Americans who "hate America" are the ones who still think the country, (its system of government, protections of rights by the constitution), is worth fighting for. I think that is pretty cool, but a bit futile at the current moment.

I think that the world, (or at least those who care about international affairs), are going through the classic stages of grief:

  • Denial -- those who ignore bad news or think it is overblown or a conspiracy of pessimists
  • Anger -- the "hate (what) America (letting be done)" crowd that gets on the news
  • Bargaining -- if we only get together and vote or attend the protest, people will wake up and change things
  • Depression -- its too late, there will be a mass migration out of the country once the police state is setup.
  • Accentance -- now we are just like France and Italy, let's disco!

... and repeat.

I went through some grief experiences and found that the best way to break out of the cycle is to remove yourself from anything to do with it.

Ethics is the measuring of morality. Morality is the measuring of good. Good is the measuring of benefit. Benefit is the measure of values.
