First of all, the book on time travel in the movie, what created by Richard Kelly, for the movie. It is fictional.

That said, I loved the movie. One of my favorites. I do admit, it's not the best acted, best written, and best fulfilled movie, but everytime i watch it, I get something more out of it.

I believe the main theme to be accepting death for what it is. Donnie was afraid to die alone, so interfered with his own lonely death. After creating a tangent universe, he begins to learn about time travel, with his new found girlfriend. She is called the living receiver. She transfers donnie's thoughts into reality. Donnie eventually can see what is going to happen, and realizes he must die in the past, to prevent the universe from being destroyed. He is no longer afraid to die alone in the future, and transfers these feelings to the past, dying alone in bed when the turbine crashes through his bedroom.

So, the main theme is Death, obviously. But other major themes are depression, science, and religion even.

The only reason that they wave to each other at the end, was because they all dreamt of this happening. The whole thing, which was once reality, is now a dream. They know each other, but only from this "dream."
