loosely connected to this, from Harry Mulisch "food for psycholigists" (Voer voor psychologen): "A writer marries a woman, gets children, becomes a journalist and no longer writes. The writer becomes ill and can no longer write. The writer, standing on tram rails, is hit by a meteor and is dead. This all is lack of talent." (translation from dutch is my own work...)

A capitalist system, on the other hand, provides ample opportunity for great art to flourish. Not only does it introduce competition, and thus, the drive to create better art, but artwork that doesn't move a patron does not get sold. If an artist can not make a living being an artist, then his art is most likely garbage.

A capitalist system provides competition to produce more art, not necessarily better art. And as for "art that does not move a patron", why blame the artists? Is it their fault that the customers don't know diddly about art and are quite willing to buy paintings of soup cans for thousands of dollars. Art is not done for the love of money but for the love of creating something expressive or wonderful. Business is done for the love of money.

There is evidence that the prospect of payment reduces creativity. See Amabile's work.

There is also evidence that it causes a lot of copying of styles that would not normally be done, so there is even more bad art.

In my case, graffiti, I do art regardless of anything. I risk the quality of my life in order to portray my definition of art. I get no pay, and I risk going to jail, but I still do it. I think people will make art no matter the consequences. Even if the penalty for graffiti was death, I would still do it.

Art has always existed. People create art for the sake of creating it.
