Well it would appear at least from Dr. Chalmers' interview video that the problem of consciousness arises from the lack of satisfaction from just correlations between the physical and the phenomenal, yet I'm uncertain whether it is possible at all to go beyond just correlations.

I am hopeful too though, go science! Perhaps I'll find some answers in neuroscience grad school. grin

Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says "But Doctor...
I am Pagliacci."

Good joke, everybody laugh.

So, in assuming no one finds the correlates in this lifetime, is it probably that they are not there, or is it probable that the scientists did not look hard enough?

Why do you believe we don't already have neural correlates for consciousness. If someone hacks off your visual cortex, there is going to be immediate and obvious effects on you subjective experience. Now we don't know exactly how the brain "correlates" to consciousness, but empirically we know that it does.

Thanks, afu. But in knowing how, we have ascertained a map, so to speak, of the mind. Without the map, what can be scientific?

And even with the map, it might have errors. It is therefore science's job to create a map and test it ad nauseum, so that it might be called reliable.

Only then would I contend we have the correlates.
