I was told by my friendly barista today that the variations, and terms, long black and flat white where Australian . Is this so?

Are you aware of other such local variations on common beverages and foodstuffs?

I've never heard of those expressions before outside of the gym locker-room. In North America we use normal expressions for coffee such as 'double-double,' (two creams, two sugars) and 'regular,' (single cream and sugar).

Are you aware of other such local variations on common beverages and foodstuffs?

So how much froth do you get on a "Double-double"? If I order a capuchin or a latte, will I get a coffee or a funny look?

Double-Double is derived from the Tim Hortons' food chain. At least that is their claim.rolling eyes

You wouldn't want to call a tim horton's cuppachino one per se... though it does have the same place-holder name. And some froth too! (more weight, less 'coffee' more chemical substitutes.)

The others are the traditional "small, medium, large" and then Starbucks has derived "tall, grande, venti" for their size varients.

What's a long black and a flat white then?

"...There was a writer who asked why it was that when we find positive experiences we say that only the physical facts are real, but in negative experiences we believe that reality is subjective. He made an example of those who say that in birth only the pain is real, the joy a subjective point of view, but that in death it is the emotional loss that is the reality." - Tony Ballantyne, Recursion.

A flat white is a single shot with milk, only lightly frothed. A cappuccino without the fluff.

A long black is a single shot with extra water. A short black is the usual espresso.

But isn't a single shot with milk a macchiato?

As you may have gathered already, the two terms I introduced above refer only to the amount of cream/milk or sugar one is putting into one's coffee. They typically have nothing to do with specialty coffees per se. Those terms were in use in restaurants and coffee shops when I was a pup, as were other terms such as 'cuppa java' and less frequently, 'cuppa mud' (as in "Gimme a cuppa mud Rosie!") which also referred to a simple cup of (pre-specialty, pre-barista era) coffee.

In the small town where I come from, a male will sometimes get a funny look for ordering something frothy or flavoured. Oil refinery 'grunts' usually don't lean toward 'Vanilla Lattes.' For myself, I usually prefer regular, old-fashioned, Columbian coffee, nothing fancy. If it 'froths,' I pass it on to my girlfriend, sister, or any female in close proximity. wink

Curious. I hadn't thought of coffee as having gender...
