It likely partly happens due to the 'shopping' phenomena and why the individual buys the coffee.

As well - there seems to be no single/double or triple/double or double/triple. Nobody seems willing to claim which double of the double-double refers to the milk or the sugar.

A "double-double" would simply be a "quad" (4 shots) where I live.

Both "latte" and "macchiato" are basically a shot with milk, except in macchiato the espresso shot is poured over milk. Apparently there is supposed to be a taste difference when you 'mark' the beverage, but, personally, I can't taste much difference.
I was told by my friendly barista today that the variations, and terms, long black and flat white where Australian . Is this so?
I've never heard of these in U.S. Pulling a 'long' (lungo) or a 'short' (ristretto) where I live usually refers to the time it takes to draw an espresso shot. Ristretto is more popular here because it's supposed to be sweeter and creamier. There are some coffee shops where a normal shot is actually a long shot (about a minute pull), and you can really taste the difference; but I think it depends on the beans, too, because it doesn't work on all roasts (for some the lungo just comes out flat and 'bitter').

A regular drip coffee with a shot of espresso here is a "shot in the dark" - I don't know if it's regional or not, though.

Starbucks calls those 'shot in the dark' drinks Americano's. Probably due to it more 'originating' down south from Canada.

The other two are the same I think.

Oh, there is also another unique quality from East/West.

Back east - Irish cream flavored coffee wasn't considered a specialty flavored coffee at second cup. In Calgary at least it is.

So, if I start a thread on what is the most popular type of coffee, what should I list?

Short black
Long black
Latte
Cappuccino
Flat white/macchiato
Drip filter
Drip filter with shot of expresso

Flavoured girly coffee (eg irish cream or mocca)

What else?

Sugar or no sugar?

Hi,

Here in New Zealand I get a long black most days - simply an espresso with a little more water. Meanwhile a flat white as I understand it (I never add milk or any other pollutants to coffee) is simple coffe with milk - its flat because its not frothed, and white because it has milk.

Cheers.
