Is there such thing as a 2D object on Earth?

One of these dimensions would be time thus leaving one dimension. Can you think of a one dimensional object? (i am excluding time)

There is no such thing as 2D or 1D object in this world. only 3d.

Dimension I really don't understand your answer.

Zack, I thought the same as you.

Are there any other opinions?

String theory has the idea that 1 dimensional objects not only exist, but are fundemental building blocks to all matter in the universe. In M theory, objects with 2 dimensions are also possible, as well as objects with up to 10 dimensions.

I don't get it is it difficult to explain in laymans?

What does a 1D object look like can I hold it or are you saying when I pick up a 3d object it is made of 1d objects?

Is it that 1D/2D objects do not exist alone on Earth but make up our 3D objects. Is it like a prism is made of loads of 2d triangles?

I'm no understanding this very well I don't think. Please explain.

I believe you are thinking of the dimensions too much in the way a computer program would realise them.

If you think that an object of 1D could be something like an energy wave of some form that would pass through you this would make it intangible to us. The same would be likely for a 2D object. I don't believe we ourselves are 3D, rather 4D as we exist in time as well.

My knowledge of this is not exactly great though.

If such string exist, we could not see them, as it seems the mind needs at least 2 dimensions to be able to see anything.

In string theory, the 1D string is fundemental. These strings are constantly vibrating, and each string has the ability to vibrate in 10 dimensions. Thus, what we see as 3D objects are just a relationship of 1D strings. But this ignores the issue of whether fields or the string are really fundemental.

In M theory, the same applies, but the 1D strings are attached to branes of greater dimensions. One example is our universe (space-time) is a 3 dimensional brane, which we would perceive as empty if not for the 1D strings that make up matter and light.

You couldn't hold it, because holding a 1D object would be giving it 3 dimensions... since when you hold it, you will have moved it from the ground,etc...

Think of when you pick up a piece of paper- it looks 2D, but when you pick it up, it is clearly 3D.

Is it like a prism is made of loads of 2d triangles?

actually, those triangles have mass... 3 dimensions.

as long as something has thickness, it has 2 dimensions.

I would recommend that you read FLATLAND since you seem to be interested in dimensions wink

I do think that this world in made up of 1d and 2d objects because in order to get to 3 d you need to go through all the other dementions first. If you think about i we live in a 3d world but there ar other things other then that like 2 d and 1 do and other dimentions like 4 and so one so, does the fourth dimention consist of the third or is it just a completely different place I think consists of all the dementions below it. In algerithmic progresion it shows that I.E. with math it goes like 0,1,2,4,8,16. These show the points of interchanging directions in any objet in those dimentions for example in a 1 dimentional world you would have no points so you get zero and in a three dimentional world you would get eigth like the eight corners on a cube, so in theory that cube consists of all the dimentions, it has lines in it and it has compete dots. so we are living also in a 1, 2 dimentional world.
