I am writing to thank, profusely, all those (and there were many more than I thought there would be) for supporting me. There are so many: Pirammi, Zoomz, 180proof, Kenichi, Gram, even "he who carries the sins of the world" Timothy, Jack: but I must especially thank Banno, who carried the brunt, along with Stefan, and Tobias who, I think, despite our constant disagreement, and my sometimes harsh and hurtful sarcasm, understands that somehow, it was really not meant personally, strange as it may seem. It is the cut and thurst of those who are passionately engaged in a subject, and of one, like me, who was trained in circustances in which one argued vigorously for his view. And, I think that Tobias learned the most from our colloquies, perhaps because he had the most to learn. In any case, he gave back as good as he got. Strange thing, and this has nothing to do with Tobias, I was never offended in the least, except those few times that it was clear (as in the case of Valen) who was simply vicious.

I was greatly amused by some of the posts. By, for instance, Beneki's ultra-Dutch Liberal suggestion that the entire thread be deleted, lest it encourage me in my evil ways. (Just as if the damage had not already been done)

And there was Socrastein's plaint that after all, what counts most in a formum like this is that the member be reassured and made to feel happy about themselves, and that the intellectual integrity of the forum came a distant second in his estimation. I was appalled when I read this, and then I realized that the American school system lauds self-esteem as the goal of education, over intellectual accomplishment. And Socrastein is a part of this blight. And then, of course, there was Morriander's panic-post, which essentially said, "Not my fault, mon. It was Dreamweaver!"

Now, speaking of Dreamweaver, I might have considered returning, (although not for a while) had I not received several messages from him explaining to me how bad I was, and making it clear that if I returned it would be on his own personal sufferance, and that he would be my probation officer, and that I should remember that I was treading a very thin line, and he would be the judge of when I had crossed it, and that, when an if I did, there would be no appeal and that I would be lynched immediately. You should understand that I could not return under such circumstances.
And finally, of course, besides Paul's e-mail attacks on me, there was the not subtle signals he gave out from time to time that he simply did not like me. I think I make Paul most uncomfortable, both personally and, especially intellectually. He is not used to being unable to reply cogently to criticisms. And I think he has more to learn than he thinks about philosophizing. In any case, as Dark Crow (whom I also thank) put it, Paul is the owner of this site. I have no wish to impose myself on him, and it is clear that I am an imposition on him.

So, now for the peroration:

Never say "never". I'll be taking a look at this site (if Paul or Dreamweaver doesn't decide to toss me off on account of this post) And, if you like, I you can glance at what I am doing. E-Philosopy; Madphilosophers.com; and Ilovephilosophy.com

I am under the handle of "kennethamy" in all three. And, my e-mail address is: kennethamy@aol.com

I will log in, from time to time, not to post, but to see whether there are any personal messages for me.

Ergo, Frater, Ave, Atque, Vale.

Well, it wasn't my "fault", because I didn't do it. They didn't let me do it when I was an administrator - otherwise it would have probably been my "fault". It is just the truth: I didn't ban you. I would have banned you before, so it doesn't matter to me - only that people were concentrating on the wholly wrong matters and wrong persons, and I simply wanted to explain that to them. But it doesn't really surprise me that you would read it like that. You have always been good at reading things like that.

I can't say I am sorry to see you leave. But I can say that I would rather have you behave like a grown up person, if it was possible. We are taught in kindergarden already that it doesn't matter if you are big, you are not allowed to hit people. I find it a good thing that knowledge does not go before manners even on these forums.

I hope your ways will be better appreciated in other forums.

Regards,
Morrandir

Expressing your thoughts is obviously welcomed, but I surely wish you wouldn't outright lie so blatantly. If you want, please paste the contents of the emails that we exchanged, and we'll let the members decide whether or not I sent "several messages from [me] explaining to [you] how bad [you] w[ere]". We'll see your deeply apologetic emails (though, I don't ask anyone to change) and that if you returned you would "be on [my] own personal sufferance"; that's quite absurd. Almost every sentence above there is a lie, apart from the last sentence and the fact that I said you would be "treading on a thin line". I have no idea why you wish to read such things into my comments.

I have never said you were a person of bad nature, because (i) I have only your posts to base what I think of your personality, (ii) I really don't know you at all. If I have said such a thing, then by all means, please point it out or retract. I can't help but presume that you haven't properly read my posts (or Morrandir's, judging by your summary) at all. Neither have I said that I do not want you on the forum, and I wish you'd stop ignoring that.

Anyhow, this is an open forum -- do what you will: stay or leave.

As I suspected, you vastly overestimate his analytical skills. Actually he has the skills, but you forgot to consider his tendency to selectively fail to use them.

besides Paul's e-mail attacks on me

When was the last time I sent you an email? I may have sent you some about your login problems in January, but it is quite known to both of us that I have not talked to you at all about your current situation, be it via email or PM or other means. And that will continue, as I don't see any point in emailing you.

Gassendi's post above, naturally, should remove any doubt of anyone that his only intention here now is to flame, troll and slander. I didn't support a ban for Gassendi before but I do now that he has demonstrated his desire to make the problematic parts of his nature as much worse as he can manage. It is unfortunate that he reacted as I expected. Banned.

As a side note, this should be filed away as further evidence that temporary bans are a bad idea.

As another side note, rest assured that I personally regret throwing away the major source of income Gassendi was for me. In the end, though, numerous large donations to the forum are not going to be treated as bribes to ensure immunity to basic requirements of civility.

And as yet a final note, most people will have noticed that my viewpoints on philosophy are closer to Gassendi's than most people's, and at one time I listed him in a community forum thread as one of my favorite philosophers on the forum. That I tend to agree with the actual philosophical content of his posts does not excuse the manner in which he posts.

Oh, everything was going fine!

This time is banned for good?

Subscription, when using another name, is always possible.

Yes, I don't believe in temporary bans, this will not be lifted. It's clear to me that the temp ban eliminated any chance of his acting tolerably. (I don't blame dreamweaver for trying it, his decision, but I think Gassendi has shown it to have been a non-constructive action at least in his case even if I may not be entitled to generalize from one case as I'd like to.)

I was talking about this:

Right now, I can log out and then entr the main page again as a guest. Then, I can subscribe as a new member with some stupid name. So, if I was banned, I could return by using another "nick". That if I'm really interested on some of the threads on this site.

You subscribe to threads. You cannot subscribe to sites, you register at sites.

If you were banned then all the IPs you've ever posted under would be automatically blocked from the registration page (though that doesn't work for AOLers, true). If you snuck around with a proxy, as some have, it still wouldn't take long to find you and I'd then require manual validation of members for a while.

Exactly why do you ban Gassendi now? Surely he is rather aggressive. But the same goes for Morrandir's and your own posts.

Anyway, I'd like to know the exact reasons for banning him.

Wow. This is having an unhappy ending. How unfortunate. Not being what would be considered a formal philosopher, and having sat upright every time I would read a Gassendi1 post, (because I knew that could count on it having an adversarial tone), I surprisingly find myself wanting to defend him. I would rather have a Gassendi1 here than a Baron Max, for instance. I was insulted by the Baron's posting persona, and can not say that for Gassendi1. Because this thread appears to be about Gassendi1, it has turned out to also be about the people posting in the thread. I feel that I know more about the posters. As for Gassendi1, I have observed that people who act as Gassendi1 has, his *bad manners*, I have always figured this was because he really didn't want anyone to know him, personally, and it was his impersonality that really bothers people. I am really sorry that he was banned. It just seems weird to me that I am still here, a rank amateur and logically challenged member. and Gassendi1 is gone. I think that everyone should look at themselves for minute and see if you don't find a little of bad behavior there also.

So goodbye Gassy, we hardly really knew ye..
